CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy can be really beneficial for people with dyslexia, dyspraxia and other processing differences because it really helps you to get in touch with your inner world of emotions and stimuluses.

The benefit of that of course is not just for people with processing differences. It is a benefit for everyone.

Do you find that you’re always there for other people but you’ve never got enough time for yourself? Do you feel that there’s always so much to do and because you get overwhelmed, you don’t know where to turn or how to start? How do you know when you’re running low?

The way that your body speaks to you is through movement, through signals of ache, pain or restriction, through sensation of pleasure and releasing tension through relaxing muscles and tissues, and through thoughts and emotions that arise from moment to moment. When you take the time in a session of CranioSacral Therapy to hear the conversation your body has with you, you are able to open yourself to your body’s deep needs, and then choose how you want to react.

Releasing tension

Open yourself to your body’s deep needs

Your heightened body awareness will help you to know what’s good for you, what things upset your balance, and what things are good to let go of. Such self-understanding is vital for you when you have to make choices about work, relationships and all sorts of daily decisions. Whether you have processing differences or not, we all want to make wise choices for ourselves.

SO, WHAT HAPPENS IN A CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY SESSION?

In CranioSacral Therapy we are observing through light touch the craniosacral rhythm, which is the third rhythm of the body after heartbeat and breathing. You lie fully clothed on a soft couch and the therapist uses a light touch, holding different parts of your body, maybe your neck, maybe your head, or your shoulder or a leg, and waits patiently. The tissues of your body can begin to unwind and release their restrictions. This is because a certain type of mechanoreceptor in the outer layers of your skin responds to light touch. And your central nervous system interprets this as calming.

In CranioSacral Therapy we invite you to talk about what you are noticing happening in your body. And if we choose to pay attention to a particular part, for example, your gut and the organs of digestion, you might gain some insight into, say, a painful bowel condition. Often the location that we touch can have impacts on distant parts of your body. As an example, the intestines are the site of millions of nerve cells that communicate with neurons in your brain, and through holding your pelvic region we might discover a connection to activity in your brain.

During a CranioSacral Therapy session you can talk or you might prefer to remain quiet. The choice always rests with you. And each session will be different. In Upledger CranioSacral Therapy a particular type of conversation between the therapist and client can lead to somato-emotional release. This is the release of perhaps long-held emotions from your body either through movement, laughter, tears or silence. It is always the case that this only happens when your body’s inner wisdom knows that the time for this is right for you. This experience can give you profound insights.

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

Bernadette has a phenomenal natural skill as a therapist. I have been lucky enough to work with her, receiving treatment, for many years. She has a lightness of touch, an effortless kindness and intuitive nature which instantly puts me at ease. She is warm, open and a patient practitioner adept at working with all kinds of people, including me and my complex trauma and learning difference with sensitivity and calm peacefulness. I’ve made gains in one CranioSacral session that had taken months and months of talking therapies to unpack.

I highly recommend Bernadette as a CranioSacral Therapist, particularly if you have, like me, Neurodiversity, experienced trauma and need a trusted, safe space to gain support for barriers that are preventing you from being your best you.
