Upledger CranioSacral Therapy

Where do you find time and space for yourself?
How often do you get the chance to focus your attention and re-centre yourself?
Which parts of yourself would you like to be more comfortable with?

CranioSacral Therapy could provide you with a perfect opportunity to find re-connection.

In a hectic world of permanently busy and stressful lives, we all need the opportunity to slow down, take stock and focus our attention inwards to re-connect with our inner self. Upledger CranioSacral Therapy can offer you the chance to allow what is within to speak to you.

Maybe you have a nagging pain within your shoulder that you live with, is troublesome, but not debilitating. Maybe by giving it your attention in a quiet and neutral space you can develop a greater understanding of what it means, of what it is doing for you, of how you can embody it differently. Perhaps you can reduce its impact or release its tension altogether.

Perhaps what is within is a recurring thought or patterns of thinking. It might be that the opportunity to be with those thoughts, silently, and in the creative space of a therapeutic environment allows you to connect to their meanings in a new way.

Built for tension – just not too much

The human body is a robust structure with fabric and strings that extend from top to toe. The structure is created with an inherent tension that holds us up and holds us together and takes us into motion. Bags of fluid are built into this structure and so we have motion and flow. Tensions that arise in the mind, psychic tensions, translate invisibly into our physical structure and this is inevitable, and it is not essentially problematic if we live in ‘perfect’ tension. But how many of us remain in our perfect tension? We don’t, because we are human beings engaged in a world of external and internal impulses that create excess tension which is translated into the body uninvited, lingers and is held.

Working a muscle can be a way of dispersing known tension. But what if the tension is less knowable? The site of pain is not always the source of tension. Emotional anxiety can be a cause of bodily tension but it can be difficult to trace its origins on your own. In a heartfelt book of prose poems about the integration of mind, body and spirit, written at some moment in the mid-20th century, the author Raden Ayou Jodjana describes the body as an expressive instrument and the nervous system as the chords that are played by our emotions and thoughts.

In CranioSacral Therapy, by paying respectful attention to your whole inner environment and body presence, your body’s inner wisdom could help you trace the origins of excess tension. This might free up your nervous system and allow you to develop a deeper and more mature relationship with yourself.

What happens in a CranioSacral Therapy session?

During CranioSacral Therapy you are fully clothed and you lie on a couch, covered with a blanket if you prefer. A session begins with a body evaluation and the therapist uses light touch placing their hands in different areas of your body: feet, knees, hip bones, ribs, shoulders and the head. Through light touch the therapist begins to evaluate the rhythm and motion of the craniosacral system.  After that, soft and precise manual techniques are used which sometimes involve just gently holding parts of the body, and sometimes involve holding and following the spontaneous movements of limbs; all of which is to help release tension and holding in any problem areas.

The sense of the therapist’s hands on your body is very light, no more than 5 grams, the weight of a 20 pence coin. What this means for you is that the therapist is listening deeply with their hands to the subtle or evident changes happening in your body tissues. You might experience that as a range of different feelings or sensations: either warmth, or softening, pulsing or tingling; you might feel deeply relaxed; you might experience bigger physical movements; or you might have moments of insight and awareness such as a memory of an injury or an operation, that help you clarify what restricts you. These changes and the insights can be the key to moving forward to self-understanding.

A session can last up to 50 minutes or longer if required, and the therapy can be used alone or integrated with other therapies.

How does CranioSacral Therapy work?

Through touch, the therapist is observing the craniosacral rhythm, which is the third physiological rhythm of the body, after heartbeat and breathing. Areas where the rhythm is reduced or abrupt can indicate places of restriction in the body. When the therapist uses a light, holding touch and patiently waits, the tissues of the body can begin to unwind and release their restrictions, and there can be an increase in fluid motion. Often the location of touch can have impacts on distant parts of your body. By paying particular attention to the gut and the organs of digestion, it could be possible to gain insight to a painful bowel condition. Or, since the intestines are the site of millions of nerve cells that communicate with neurons in the brain, we might discover a connection to activity in your brain. CranioSacral Therapy can be a wonderful relaxation therapy because a certain type of mechanoreceptor called tactile corpuscles in the outer layers of the skin responds to the light touch and this is interpreted by the central nervous system as calming.

During a CranioSacral session you can remain quiet or you might wish to talk. The choice always rests with you. In Upledger CranioSacral Therapy a particular type of conversation between therapist and client can lead to SomatoEmotional Release: this is the releasing of perhaps long-held emotions from the body either through movement, laughter, tears or silence. It is always the case that this release only happens when your body’s inner wisdom knows that the time for this is right for you. This experience can give you profound insights.

What can CranioSacral Therapy do for you?

The main benefits of CranioSacral Therapy are that it can help release deep tension, release pain and dysfunction, give rise to a shift in your thinking or perspective on things, and help to improve whole body health. CranioSacral Therapy can also help to uncover the deeper causes of symptoms such as chronic pain or fatigue that you experience. The types of problems that people have used CranioSacral Therapy for include stress and tension-related problems, migraines and headaches, brain and spinal cord injuries and other acute and chronic conditions e.g. irritable bowel syndrome.

What other people say

Thanks for the session today. It was amazing and I’m still getting the sensations, but I feel far more energy-full than I have for months…
